Honourable Chief Minister Sri A Revanth Reddy directed the officials to ensure that the drinking water crisis does not rise during the summer and to take all necessary precautions. In the wake of water levels reached at dead storage levels at many reservoirs due to deficit rainfall this year, CM Revanth Reddy held a review on the measures to tackle the drinking water crisis in the summer with ministers N Uttam Kumar Reddy, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and the top officials of Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration and Urban Development and Drinking water supply wings at the Dr BR Ambedkar Secretariat on Thursday.
The officials explained to the CM the details of water storage in the reservoirs and the quantity of water required for drinking purposes in the state. The Chief Minister instructed the officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan for the supply of drinking water to every household in Tandas, Gudems, SC colonies, villages and urban areas. The action plan will be prepared together by Irrigation, MA and UD, Panchayat Raj and Drinking Water Supply departments.
Officials explained to the Chief Minister that Andhra Pradesh is lifting more than 9 TMC of water from Nagarjuna Sagar for drinking water needs. The Chief Minister ordered the officials to take up proper assessment of the utilization of water and ensure that water is not diverted for other purposes. The Chief Minister asked the officials to review in detail the requirement of water and write a letter to KRMB (Krishna River Management Board) seeking permission to draw from Sagar and Srisailam projects for drinking purposes.
The officials told the CM that the state did not face any water crisis as the Jurala project was filled with rainwater during April and May in the past. Otherwise, the state would have to request the Karnataka government for the release of water from Narayanpur reservoir. The state drew water from the reservoir three years ago. The CM suggested to the officials to write a letter to KRMB first and consider the request for water release from Karnataka as the last option. The Chief Minister said that many water resources were neglected after the new water schemes were launched and asked the officials to find out the possibility of bringing them back into utilization.
Citing the Kagna River as an example, the Chief Minister said that there was an opportunity to utilize water from Kagna in Tandur and Kodangal Assembly constituencies. The river was abandoned after the Mission Bhagiratha scheme was launched. All such water facilities should be revived and also take up the repairs of drinking water borewells, wells and motors immediately. The funds earmarked under ACDP for MLAs up to Rs one crore or above, if necessary, should be used for repairs and drinking water supply.
During his visit to Adilabad district, the CM said that there was no supply of drinking water in many villages and the previous government had given false reports to the Center that 99 percent of the houses were provided safe drinking water through Mission Bhagiratha. As a result, the state was not receiving funds under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The Chief Minister directed the officers to stop submitting such false reports and check at the field level before forwarding genuine reports to the Centre. The CM instructed the Chief Secretary to hold a review with the District Collectors in two days on available water resources in their respective districts, required drinking water needs and the steps to be taken to overcome the water crisis to ensure that there is no drinking water problem anywhere till the end of July.
When the officials brought to the notice of the CM about the nonpayment of salaries to the staff in the Rural Water Supply (RWS) wing for the last two years, CM Revanth Reddy ordered the Finance department to release funds and pay the pending salaries. The RWS officials are suggested to pay the salaries directly to the field-level staff.
GHMC – DRINKING WATER SUPPLY
CM Sri Revanth Reddy directed the officials to ensure that there is no problem with the drinking water supply within the Greater Hyderabad City Corporation ( GHMC ) limits. Officials said that alternative arrangements for water supply from Yellampalli and Nagarjuna Sagar will be made in case the city witnesses a drinking water shortage in the summer. The CM wanted the officials to review the drinking water needs in the city at the micro level and an appropriate plan should be drawn up. The officials brought to the notice of the Chief Minister that police are creating trouble in the movement of water tankers in some parts of the city. The chief minister directed the police officials to ensure that the movement of drinking water tankers is not obstructed by the police till the end of summer.
